Black History Month 2021
February 3, 2021

February is Black History Month.

This year’s theme, The Future is Now, is a call to action for us all to build on the immense contributions that Black communities in Canada have made and continue to make while recognizing the transformative work that they are doing right now. It is also a reminder for us all to continue our efforts to combat systemic racism in all of its forms in a way that is informed by Black history, Black voices, and Black lived experiences.

This year, we are also celebrating 25 years since the establishment across the country of Black History Month, a milestone achieved through the efforts of the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black woman Member of Parliament and the first Black woman federal Cabinet minister in Canada.

This year’s theme, The Future is Now, is an opportunity to celebrate the transformative work that Black communities, including Black youth, Black essential workers, and many others, are doing now, here in Laurier–Sainte-Marie and across the country.

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the work of the International Committee for the Promotion of Creole and Literacy (KEPKAA in Creole), Never Was Average, and the Fondation Dynastie and its Gala Dynastie, the Black Theatre Workshop, as well as the Round Table on Black History Month. Your many contributions and your efforts to create an even better future for all are making a real difference.

Visit at KEPKAA, July 27, 2020

I invite you to watch the virtual launch of the 30th Montreal edition of the Black History Month celebrations organized by the Round Table on Black History Month.
